And, now back down to earth (or below).

This is an excellent take-down on why I am terrified about the result's of today's mid-terms.  The Right-Wing machine is destroying the US, and a whole bunch of people are convinced that's a good thing.

I feel the same sinking sense of despair I felt in 2004 when the Shrub was re-elected, and the stage was set for the current recession.  If the Republicans get back in power, look for the Depression of the 21st century to start.

It's wrong to despair, but I can't say as I feel any hope.  Not today.

I feel your despair. All of the Republicans in our neck of the woods are running on a platform of cutting taxes and government spending. Why they think that government spending, which is what has gotten us out of every depression/recession in history, is a bad thing is beyond my comprehension. We're suffering from unemployment, and yet they're pledging to cut government jobs. It makes no sense to me!

The depression is already here. And the spending last time didn't make it better, it prolonged it for years.
Some fiscal sanity and restraint on the government intrusion into my life will be a blessing.

I choose to be optimistic. And no matter what the outcome of this election, nothing could be as awful as another Shrub.

Palin would be worse than the Shrub, but thankfully that's for the next election.

I'm with you, Reasie, but at the same time one of the lessons of life is that you sometimes have to hit absolute bottom in order to begin rising again. It's the medieval wheel of fortune.
Obama's election literally kept us from hitting bottom. Unfortunately, I think we have to decline further before we as a nation "get" it. I also think that as long as a good 20% of the electorate is being regularly exploited and terrified by the Fox channel, Breitbart, Limbaugh et al, it's going to take a massive upheaval for us to make any inroads.
That doesnt' mean I don't have hope. I do - we got through Father Coughlin and red scares and McCarthy, we got through McVeigh, we'll get through the corporate gilded age aided and abetted by the extreme right as well.
