Pennsic 2008 (warning: Image heavy!)

So, Pennsic.

I know most of you will be skimming the play-by-play posts (seeing as there are so many), so I will attempt to distill my awesome week of Pennsic down to a fairly manageable size.

I'm making no promises, mind you.

(Some things will be left out, but they may pop up at disparate times throughout the next couple of weeks.)

But I do have pictures to make it easier.

First of all, the whole Attack Laurel thing - evilapprentice, once I found out it was you who actually managed to put her face in the dirt upon greeting me, it all made sense.  At first I was all "oh, WTF, what hath I wrought, I must be insane?!", but now I am all giggles.  I have posted comments in your journal, but just in case, here it is again:  Email me, I haz prezzies 4 U.

And, you are awesome.  I hope your ankle heals quickly, and you were very much missed at the party.

As for the party - it went smashingly, especially for just being advertised on LJ.  I am now firmly of the opinion that all parties need glow bracelets and candy cigarettes, even if it does mean that certain persons (*cough* nq3x*cough*) hog all the picture glory and end up with their photo in the Pennsic Independent instead of me.

Fortunately, I have had my revenge by way of YouTube.  Muahahahahaha.

It was MyBob's idea for the Land Snarks - we stuck "fins" on both Bobs' heads, and they toured the party, insulting everyone.  That, coupled with the initial speeches (I'll post those tomorrow), entirely too much sugar manifested in odd shapes (thank you, theodorad), and candy and glow bracelets, made for a raucous few hours, even though everyone was sober.  Pictures:

Theo making food, victoriapringle, who made the party possible, and sno-men.  The building was made by His Majesty Atlantia, sinclairhawkins, and is awesome.

Snarks in action, Big Tobacco, and the Dean's coat...

And some pictures of my guests (I love you all), including a really gorgeous one of  tashadandelion:

I honestly could not pick out a best outfit to give the prize to - you were all amazing.  My deepest apologies, but y'all rock in the rockingest rocky way possible (rock.  rock.  rock), so no-one gets the prize.  However, for those that wish to have a commemorative tote bag or t-shirt, they will be going on sale at my zazzle store next week.  I'll post links then.

If you want more pics from the party, check the gallery marked "Pennsic 2008" in my pictures.

Going back a bit (to Sunday), Gardiner's processed into Court like a wild bunch of super-cool organized pike-type people for the opening ceremonies.  We even got the honour of being up front, leading their Majesties in.  eleanors_closethad designed and made up flags for the populace to wave, and I dodged in and out of the pike line, collecting and handing out flags - essentially, playing chicken with the pikes, while sinclairhawkins opined that I would probably lose that particular game.

I agreed, but survived.  It looked awesome, from the garters I painted, to the fact that the drum kept people in time.

More pictures, natch:

(a not really very good panoramic shot of them.)

My favourite shot of Bob, and a couple of others:

Camping with both Vair and Ermine and Gardiner's is so delightfully drama-free, that I quake in fear of ever having to camp anywhere else.  Entirely debunking the idea that authenticity enthusiasts are anything like Attack Laurels, I caught the Pike at one of their favourite games, pick-up-sticks:

...and later in the week, we even managed to get down to Willow point to get a picture of us under the willow we planted almost 15 years ago (when we camped there, it had no willow, so we planted one, with permission):

We had a lovely surprise, in that cathgracegot put on vigil for, then received her Laurel, in our camp - we got a couple of the best pictures of the day, I think:

Contemplation before, and family after.  What could be better?

I spent some delightful times hanging out in the Vortex of Evil[TM]; by all accounts, my stuff even sold fairly well - very well for a first-timer, they tell me.  I am just happy anything sold, and will be joining the Vo'E for Holiday Faire.

The weather cooperated mightily for the entire week, though we did have a couple of rain scares, and a truly spectacular weather phenomenon on Thursday morning - for a little while, it looked like Armageddon was coming for us over the battlefield.  I got some really awesome (in the correct sense of the word) pictures:

And then, the sunshine came out, and it was beautiful, just in time for cathgrace's elevation:

And on the last night, we played for all comers in the V&E common tent;  nq3x is far too flattering when he says I have musical talent, but I do enjoy it.  We had a great time, and I would love to do it again.  And copies of arrangements and compositions will be on their way to certain people soon.

Best Pennsic ever.  Clearly, I will never be able to go again; nothing can ever match this one.

Ok, NOW I feel like I was there. tashadandelion and I have been collaborating on various incarnations of that headpiece for years now, and at first glace I thought, “How did you get a picture of me at the party?”

:-D

Fun times. Will this be annual?

You know, people keep asking me if I'm going to do it next year, and all I can think is "holy crap! I'll have to come up with all new material!!". :) I have no idea how professional comics do it.

I will also have to find more glow things - I gave out 200 glow bracelets.

Maybe next year we'll have a rum pool with rubber duckies floating in it. We can play at pullinh the duckies out with our teeth...

Your party was awesome! Thank you so much for hosting it! :) I especially enjoyed the speeches and seeing everybody in really cool clothes. I (and several others) snagged a lovely photo of you and Bob before the festivities, and you're welcome to snag it off my Pennsic post.

Ps. Where in the world did you find red velvet twinkies???

Aug. 12th, 2008 05:50 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

The red velvet twinkies are called "Bingles", and they're made by Little Debbie. I actually had a merry chase through convenience stores for sno-balls, since they aren't available in my area. Red velvet Twinkies, sure - but sno-balls? Noooooo...

Everyone tells me there will be a next year. ;)

I think this will degenerate suitably until we besmirch the reputation of all SCA laurels, and my work will be done. Then I will retire to my little oubliette in the country.

And I missed it! *grumble grumble grumble*

And now I have to top Bob. Good Lord, what's that gonna take?!

*sigh*

By the way, how is it that tashadandelion can even make glowsticks look classy? I don't get it.

I hope to get to crash that party next year. Glad to hear you liked the building... Version 2.0 of that particular building is INSANE... even by my standards. I need more squires and friends to help put that thing up next time. and a semi to pull it around with.

GREAT shots of the Vigil and elevation... thanks.

Hope to see you again soon.

Now I know why I spied you walking down Battle Road so often ;) I camp just up the block from Vair and Ermine (Camp of the Three Bears, we're not exciting to look at but we've got a bread oven) I've always admired the Vair and Ermine camp, so pretty!

Thank you for hosting the meeting. I especially enjoyed the convocation speech. I am sorry that we had to go, but a friend was put on vigil for Pelican and we had to stop by and give our congratulations.

I hope I wasn't too dorky when I stopped you in the food court... ok I was totally dorky, but hope you won't hold that against me.

Please do another party next year!!

Yay! I can haz pick-choors! I must confess again how gratified I am to have attended The Party. Never before have I had such fun while completely and alarmingly sober. Next year's will be better.

You have become a fixture at the VoE. You are fun. You bring tone. Your presence is yumminess incarnate. Therefore, you are hereby sentenced to hang out with us at least some of the time at every event, or I will chase you down with glowsticks.

I was so looking forward to your party--but we had a vigil in our encampment that night for a friend being elevated to Pelican, and...well...we closed it down at nine. And eleven. And midnight. The third time we closed it down, we put out all the lights and scurried to bed before anyone else arrived! (And then got back up and battened down the hatches for the storm.)

Do it again next year? Please?
I saw you once in the marketplace, but by the time I realized it was you, it was too late.

Great! I'll continue floggin the patterns at other events as well.

Tonight I'm doing the books, and I'll give you an accuate final number and also let you know what patterns are low - Katherine was the best-seller, I think.

Great party! I didn't get to stay too long for it but would definitely come again for next year's. I do have a suggestion for next year's party (if you wish). Scavenger hunt. (just think about the evil you could have with it...)

Thank you for hosting what really was an excellent party.

Jenthies on flickr put up some lovely pictures of it in case you missed those (or for anyone else that interested too. Some of the shots are blackmail worthy really funny.)

As for next year, rubber ducks in rum, hmm? How about some gummy bear vodka to go with that? One of my household mates made that this year and, if you had seltzer water to it, it tastes exactly like a simple fruit punch. The big different between gummy bear vodka and fruit punch is that after a few sips of the vodka everyone that has had some starts singing ~Gummy bears! bouncing here and there and everywhere!~ ....so should I bring some next time?

Oriental Trading has every tacky glow, flashing light, or sparkly thing one can possibly imagine. And for surprisingly reasonable prices, too.

And... they also have a fair assortment of blank, decorate-your-own stuff: paperweights, mugs, canvas bags, hats.... all sorts of silliness potential.

(Although once you get on their catalog mailing list, they really don't know when to stop....)
