The circle of life (and Spanish)

The Freescholar/White Scarf meet was such fun, I was wistfully thinking about slapping on some armour tonight and fighting, damn the consequences.

Alas, pain last night, all night, and bad enough this morning that I am uncontrollably close to tears and thinking I'm ugly and stupid (side effect of no sleep) means no fighting unless things get better.

Fuck this shit.  I am somewhat tired.

I did, however, enjoy my discussion with kass_rants in yesterday's post's comments section this morning (make sense?  Don't worry) was fun - it's the little things that keep you going, sometimes.  I love it when people question my stuff, as long as they're not assholes about it (which the lovely Kass never is); it forces me to keep evolving my work and refining it - I never want to stop and say "that's good enough" - that's the day I fossilize into place.

But the meet this weekend - I has pictures!  Typing hurts, but it was fun, I saw lots of people, and I'm really impressed by our younger generation.  I know I'm an irrelevant old fogey when it comes to rapier, but I do care about where we're going, and I appreciate it when people at least pretend they're listening to me.  :)

Pics:

Everyone fighting (or talking about it, at least)

Proof that Freescholars and Provosts can occupy one room without spontaneously bursting into flame

A mass gathering of Provosts (seasonal; rare).

It was also a good weekend at the farm; we have vulture eggs again:

They're back in the old barn that's falling to pieces.  I went to get a photo of the eggs, and thought both parents were out - I knocked, the way I usually do, to warn them, but still managed to surprise one of them, who hopped away quickly, but didn't leave the barn, which is a good sign.

This nesting pair is a lot more comfortable with our presence; we try not to do anything to scare them off, so I hope they'll hang around more and more (I also hope they'll confine their mass pooping to the barn roof).

I promised photos of the epic squirrel nest (one without flash, one with):

It's made almost entirely of plastic and fibreglass insulation - talk about recycling!  I haven't seen any movement, so I'm guessing they're not using it any more, but there's evidence that squirrels have been using the woodshop for years - there are gnawed corn cobs in the rafters.

We have other stuff, but it's mostly skulls, so probably not that interesting to anyone but me.

All in all, it was a lovely weekend; the dogwoods are in full  bloom, I got to see people I haven't seen in yonks, and I had a good time.

Awwwww... If you keep on being so nice to me and not ripping my head off (and me yours), people are going to stop thinking we're Teh Big Ebil. And then what are we going to do for fun?!?!!?

I'm sorry that it hurts to type and I made you type so much this morning. =( But it's so rare that I get anyone in a discussion like this that I am absolutely rabid when I do. Thanks for playing!

I LOVE new information. This is awesome. Thanks again!

No, thank *you* - I love going further into a subject, and this can alter how our Gardiner's people can think about the way we dress. I'm contemplating re-doing the bodies I'm wearing this weekend for a demo so that I can point my skirt to them.

Oh, er, yeah - evil! Rar! Kill all apprentices! 8)

Yay! New bodies! Yay!

Yay! Kill and torture apprentices! Yay!

Heh heh heh heh heh. Welcome to my overcrowded world. I need another period like a need a hole in the head... but that never stops me!

clueless
One of these days one of you guys are gonna have to explain the freescholar thing to me. I am an authorized rapier fighter, both light and heavy, and I have only the foggiest notion of what it is.

Re: clueless
Rapier fighter do good, Provost want to say to other people, This Fighter Do Good. Three Provosts say Give Figter Yellow Scarf, and Other People Will see Provost Approval.

It's not a kingdom award, it's an in-house recognition of a fighter that shows leadership and skill potential by at least three Provosts. It's not required to become a Provost.

I really wish I could have gone to the meeting. Alas, the Wedding from Hell(TM) had to prevail, and I spent the weekend in NJ and PA, at a wedding and visiting with family.

I will definately (hopefully) make the next one...if there is one...

What?!? No pictures of the skulls?!? Of course there are people interested! My dad used to always collect them for me from our property outside of Dallas...the best one I had was a beaver skull - it directly contributed to why my first college roommate requested a roommate change the end of the semester (yay!). Unfortunately, it eventually contracted....something? and fell apart. I still have the teeth around somewhere in a baggie. I don't know what will make skulls disintegrate. The beavers on our property contracted something that was killing them off, hence me getting the skull and I always wondering if it had something to do with the skull falling apart (I'm probably lucky I didn't contract some sort of beavery hanta virus). I currently have a ground squirrel skull that I found during the first Crown Tourney my husband fought for me - it's in my reliquary bag and has a whole backstory about being St. Francis' pet mouse, sold to me exclusively in Bruges.....

Do you ever get into the early stuff of Elizabeth's reign that is more Tudor in shaping, say 1560-1575 ish?

I'm afraid I don't - Gardiner's is late 16th Elizabethan (1580-on), and the Jamestown stuff is early 17th (1607-on).

I've never really liked the Tudor style as much, so I haven't done as much research into it (I find I do better sticking to one era and place).

Aww, proto-vultures! What kind of vultures live at your place?
Oh, coincidentally, I managed to get my hands on four black vulture pinions this weekend. Think they're large enough for quills?

Glad the FS/WS meet was fun! W had a great time :-)

Our almost tame vultures are black vultures, but we also get turkey vultures (and if there's something in the woods,we get about 30-40 of them!).

Vulture feathers should be big enough - hopefully they won't smell.

Cool! The feathers don't actually smell, which I found odd because the vultures themselves sure did. They will be washed thoroughly all the same.
